The cold, winter months can cause your energy costs to rise. By following the tips below, you can save money on your energy bills during the winter.

Have you furnace regularly maintained.

They key to having your furnace run properly to consistently have it maintained. Have it inspected during the fall and consider having it professionally cleaned to keep it running efficiently. Don’t forget to have the filter in your furnace checked and changed when needed.

Ensure that your home is adequately insulated.

A home that is not adequately insulated could lose up to 20% of its heat, causing your heating system to work harder. Have your basement, crawlspace, walls, floors, and attic checked to see if there is sufficient insulation.

Check for air leaks.

If you notice any cracks or crevices in your home, there is a good chance that hot air is escaping through them and you should immediately have them sealed. Warm air commonly escapes through windows so have those checked out as well.

Take control of your thermostat.

To better conserve energy, set your thermostat to 68 degrees when you are not in your house or before you go to bed at night. Programmable thermostats are great to have and make temperature control much easier and convenient.

Let the light shine in!

Take advantage of the sun’s solar energy by opening up your drapes and curtains so that you can naturally heat your home. Close them at night to prevent cold air from creeping in.
