When to change your HVAC filters

There are a couple of factors to consider when it comes to changing your air filters. Now, you could just disregard those and change them every 30-60 days as recommended by the manufacturer; after all, there’s no downside to knowing your air filters are always clean. However, if you want to be a little more discerning about it, then you need to factor in things like

  • Air Quality
  • Household Pets
  • Type of Filter you’re using
  • Air Pollution Levels

In a fairly bustling area like Alexandria  so close to DC, you can expect air pollutants to perhaps be a little higher than average, especially if there’s any construction going on around you house.

Pet dander is a pretty big contributor to clogged HVAC filters, so the more pets, the sooner you’ll have to change them.

So, if you live in what could be considered a “normal” area with no pets, you can probably stretch those filters out a little longer than the 30-60 day range. If you do have multiple pets, or are particularly sensitive to allergies, you may want to heed the advice of the manufacturers and change them bi-monthly or so, especially in high-pollen seasons.

But there’s only really one way to know when to change an air filter – check and see if ti’s dirty!
